When you're traveling long-term with kids, the idea of packing light can feel… impossible. Kids come with stuff. And more stuff. And then some backup stuff—just in case. But lugging around five suitcases and three carry-ons isn’t just exhausting—it slows you down, costs you extra, and makes transitions harder.
Good news? You don’t have to bring it all. With a little strategy and the right mindset, you can travel light—even with little ones in tow.
Here’s how:
Most families overpack out of fear—“What if we need it?” But in reality, most destinations have what you need. You can always buy diapers, a new T-shirt, or even a pack of crayons on the road. Focus on packing for versatility, not just for “what ifs.”
This simple rule can save your sanity.
Each family member gets:
5 tops
3 bottoms
2 pairs of shoes
1 lightweight jacket
1 swimsuit
🎒 Add in a few extras based on your destination’s weather—but keep it tight. Mix-and-match pieces make this way easier. Remember, this is just an ideal... It takes a lot of practice and creativity to pack light, do your best... your load will lighten over time.
Don’t underestimate the power of good luggage.
Top choices for family travelers:
Backpacks: Ideal for older kids or parents who want hands-free travel
Rolling carry-ons: Great for smaller kids to pull their own gear
Packing cubes: Lifesavers for organizing by person, type, or destination
💡 Pro Tip: Color-code each child’s cubes so you’re never digging for underwear again.

Here’s what NOT to overpack:
🚫 Toys – Bring 2-3 small favorites + an activity bag for flights.
🚫 Books – Opt for a Kindle or library apps.
🚫 Full medicine cabinet – Bring basics. Pharmacies are global.
🚫 Multiple “just-in-case” outfits – One is plenty. Laundry exists.
What to definitely bring:
✅ Travel documents, medications, tech gear, and chargers
✅ Favorite comfort item (for young kids especially)
✅ Small travel towel or blanket
✅ Snacks for travel days
Instead of giving every kid their own “everything,” choose items that can be shared.
Examples:
One set of toiletries for the family (Not possible for everyone, including us... but definitely saves the most space!
Shared electronics (iPad, charging block)
Layered clothing instead of heavy coats
Layering is key—base layers, fleece, and a packable jacket can handle most weather conditions without taking up suitcase space.
Especially for long-term travel, a travel capsule wardrobe saves time and space.
Think:
Neutrals + a few fun prints
Quick-dry, wrinkle-resistant fabrics
Shoes that are comfy and multipurpose (think: sneakers + sandals)
Bonus if everything fits in a carry-on or backpack!
Once you’ve packed…
✅ Remove 5 items.
✅ Zip up your bag.
✅ Take a deep breath and trust that you've got what you need.
You’ll never regret packing light—but you will regret dragging heavy suitcases through a cobblestone street with two hungry kids.
Packing light gives your family more flexibility, freedom, and fun. Less stuff = less stress. The goal isn’t perfection—it’s intention.
